A Wooden Shoe

Growing up in a country that has more waterways and lakes than land, it was a definite advantage to walk on wooden shoes, or “klompen” as they’re called in the local lingo. By the time I had worn the soles nearly paper-thin they felt like comfortable slippers. Just before the holes appeared, I asked for new ones… ah… the smell of fresh wood and varnish. Admittedly the boats we sell are more beautiful and sophisticated, but to me at the time nothing could beat a boat fashioned from an old wooden shoe. A stick for the mast and an old handkerchief for a sail…
