Beauty from Inside

It seems like a long time ago when I found some small but truly beautiful ship models at an exhibition in Spain. It must have been around 1968. It took me awhile to find out that they’d been made in one of the high security prisons of the notorious Franco regime that ruled Spain at the time. My subsequent investigation turned into a story resembling that of the Birdman of Alcatraz.

Inside the prison, I encountered a French bank robber of repute who had become an expert in marine archaeology. He had created a small production workshop in the echoing spaces of the huge, hollow and inhuman buildings the prison occupied. I have seldom met a more interesting person in my life. He became a mentor and friend over time. The sound of the succession of huge iron doors being locked behind me on my way to his model sanctuary still reverberates in my mind.

It looks like a weathered and aged skin, even more emphasized by visibly rusty nails.
